IJsselmeer: a spatial perspective looks at the area from various angles: geomorphology, history, planning and the economy. The book studies spatial features, presents design proposals for the future, and at the same time considers the dynamics of the metropolitan region into which the area has merged, the stagnating ecosystem, the impact of climate change and the increasing pressure of recreational activities. The drawings, maps and photographs in the book are not just illustrations, but a essential part of what it has to tell us: they ‘describe’ the landscape as it used to be, is now and may yet become.
‘[…] the delta area is under pressure. New ecological insights sometimes clash with urban development: the ‘delta paradox’. This book shows what the paradox entails, and it seeks to blend ecology and urbanization into a more positive outlook for the future. It calls for a spatial approach to developments in the area.’’
Wim Kuijken, Government Commissioner for the Delta Programme
